This polygon data set represents the boundaries of all election precincts within the County of Berks. Additionally, the associated attributes reflect information regarding which state and congressional districts by which its consituents are represented.
This data set was created to manage information regarding election precincts within the County of Berks. The data was originally created from landbase information and municipal bondaries from the initial land base creation by the Assesment Department - Mapping Office in the early 1990s. In the mid 2000s extensive work was done to realign boundaries and topologically correct coincident political boundaries and further attribute data making the information more useful for gis applications and for the Election Services Department.

Data was created from original Arc/INFO coverage of the County of Berks municipal boundaries. Boundaries of individals precincts in municipalities were creaetd from legal descriptions created and provided in whole or part by staff in the Berks County Election Services Department, the Berks County Planning Department, the Berks County Assessment Department - Mapping Office, and the Berks County IS-GIS Department. Various historical maps and tabular data was used to compile the geometry of data set and US Census tract and block data was used to aid in the completions and created new precicnt boundaries where applicable.
Legal descriptions and boundary changes must be officially verified and adopted by the by the County of Berks - Board of Elections as well as the Commonwelath of Pennsylvania - Department of State and must adhere to the Department of State laws regarding their creation. They are current and complete at the time of the data's publication or distribution.
Attributes originally compiled by the County of Berks Assessment Department - Mapping Office staff and have been further built upon and verified by the County GIS staff with the assistance of various Election Services staff. This involved the use of tabular data provided and maintained by the County of Berks Department of Election Services.
Coincidental boundaries have been topologically corrected to coincide with he original municpal boundaries created from the county's base tax mapping project. Additional boundaries have been created from various land base datasets (streets centerlines, streams, census boundaries) where applicable. These additional data sets where compiled and verified using PA DCNR Aerial Imagery from 2004 captured at 1:2400 with a 2- foot pixel resolution. The municipal boundaires are not of survey grade and represent the best information available via deed and other histroical recorded instruments regarding municipal boundaries within Berks County.
